“My name is Carl Hulme and I have worked at Sevacare for four months. I work at Oldham Learning Disabilities Services, supporting Ben and Peter at a supported living scheme in the heart of Oldham.
Every day is very different when supporting people with Learning Disabilities. I support Ben and Peter in a number of ways including practical and personal support, days out, social occasions and other various activities.
Being a Support Worker can also be very challenging, but extremely rewarding at the same time. Making such a significant difference to people’s lives is exceptionally important to me and I love supporting my Service Users to enable them to live an independent life as far as they are able.
Ben and Peter have profound complex needs and autism. Ben also suffers from severe epileptic seizures, which can be life threatening. Although both Service Users have a number of complex needs, they do not let this get in the way of them living a full, rich and active life. Both Ben and Peter love to relish in a new challenge and get excited about new opportunities which are available to them.
Most recently, I have supported Ben to attend a college course studying Art, which takes place once a week. Ben also enjoys a very active social life and meeting new friends at his local pub, ‘Oddies’. Oldham Learning Disabilities Services holds a weekly tenants meeting, where a number of people from other supported living schemes come together to discuss future plans, job & career opportunities, topical issues and to socialise. Ben chairs each tenants meeting and assists in writing the minutes of each session. I am also supporting Ben to attend a Take That concert this year, which we are both very excited about!
Peter is also an active member in his local community, enjoys going to Church and loves to go to his local fish and chip shop every Friday for his dinner. He is able to do this totally independently without my support.
Supporting people like Ben and Peter is by far the best job in the world. Seeing their faces light up when they talk to me about their day is the most meaningful part of the job. I thoroughly enjoy being a Support Worker and believe the services Sevacare provide to people are truly life changing and make such a positive impact on people’s lives.”
