Training

Sevacare has a dedicated training department which employs a number of full time Training Officers to work across the company, training our staff in advance of starting work and then progressively in helping them to learn new skills and embark on NVQ qualifications. The skills and experience of these Training Officers include:

  • two who are registered nurses;
  • one who has many years of experience working within hospitals with people experiencing mental health issues;
  • one who has 20 years experience in working with people with learning disabilities;
  • one who has expertise in the areas of health and safety, risk assessments and other related subjects.

All are qualified A1 assessors and are qualified adult education teachers.
Having an internal training department means that training courses can be scheduled at short notice in order to ensure staff are skilled and have the knowledge to support a service user. It also means that Sevacare has a built-in quality assurance mechanism for the services offered - we know the exact level and content of training delivered to every member of our staff.
The training courses offered to employees at Sevacare are structured but flexible. Bespoke sessions are often designed to meet the individual requirements of the staff working with our service users. The experience of the trainers brings these sessions to life and their first hand experience of working alongside service users gives the trainees a unique, real-life insight into the needs and expectations of service users and their families.
Sessions such as Dementia Awareness, Stroke Awareness, Team Teach, Makaton, Signing and Guiding etc can be delivered in a local branch. More specialist training such as Managing Challenging Behaviour are delivered after the trainer has familiarised themselves with the specific issues facing the service user. This often results in the trainer becoming part of the care team, so that they can get to know the service user and design a training course specifically around the needs of the service user and the care workers supporting them. This is also a regular occurrence for complex moving and handling procedures. A trainer will attend a call, with the service user's permission, and advise the care workers in situ as to the most appropriate and safest transfer techniques. Involving the service users in this form of training also affords them an opportunity to discuss how they would prefer care workers to do things.
